Yousuf Karsh, Canadian Portraitist, was first and foremost a man in control. Born in 1908, he owned his own studio by 1932. At the age of 24 he was well on his way to building an international reputation for flawless technique and an endless attention to every detail. Though most of his subjects were people of great power and influence, Karsh was the absolute master of every photo session. In one incident that has assumed the proportion of legend he snatched a cigar from Winston Churchill's lips when the Prime Minister refused to remove it.
